Cinema Crazed

The folks at Sinema Saliba manage to concoct an interesting indie experimental anthology film around the theme of Frankenstein and rebirth with a series of short films that dabble in narratives revolving around mortality and death all of whom vary in tones of artistic to the utterly absurd. Director Matthew Saliba pulls out all the stops for this anthology picture that deconstructs the tale of Frankenstein and sets the framework down in assorted set pieces and flavors that help this movie feel like a varied buffet of vignettes that will manage to perfectly entice the viewer's imagination and rethink the concept of the mad doctor and the monster. Read More...

Cranked on Cinema
by Jamie Lisk

Matthew Saliba first came to my attention back in 2006 when his short film, “Vampyros Lesbos”, appeared as a contribution in the “Deadtime Stories” DVD, a feature length anthology piece produced by Digger Films. Apparently this notion of releasing a feature length movie in an anthology-format struck a chord with Saliba who, in 2007, launched a project calling on various Montreal-based filmmakers to create short film works using the Frankenstein novel as inspiration. The outcome of this effort would become what we know now as “Frankenstein Unlimited” -- a compilation of six short films spanning every conceivable film genre, directed by six different people, each with their own distinct cinematic style and flavour. While the tone of the films vary, there is, nonetheless, an unrelenting sense poignancy and gloom to the piece as a whole, and even a bit of fun. Read More...

In 2007, Montreal director Matthew Saliba brought together five other young local filmmakers to create an anthology of short films using themes from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. The resulting compilation, Frankenstein Unlimited, is definitely a mixed bag, but each of the six films is an interesting, if sometimes obscure, take on the classic novel. Read More...

SCREENED AT THE 2010 FANTASIA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL: One of the pleasures of Fantasia is that, while the draws are often much-anticipated movies from around the world, it always has room for smaller films, including enthusiastic showcases for locally-produced works. They're not always on the largest screen and sometimes they're run at odd hours - audiences would have to go to the secondary screen on Sunday morning for this anthology of six tales inspired by Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" - but it's an important part of the festival, even if the results are somewhat uneven. Fatally Yours

The main issue when assessing an anthology, whether it be a film, written, or otherwise, is that inevitably there will be one or two pieces that are going to stand above all else collected, and if the rest of the pieces aren’t quite up to snuff, it just makes them worse. This leads to a generally uneven affair and often general indifference in your audience. After all, they can’t say they hated it, because there are parts they truly enjoyed, and yet, they can’t say they loved it either, because there are parts that just didn’t “pop” as much as the ones that excited them. Montreal filmmaker Matthew Saliba organized this home-grown anthology of short films spun from the basic theme of the original Frankenstein novel. The resulting ideas cover a wide range of genres and tastes, and they’re all fun. But the stand-out is Saliba’s opening salvo, DARK LOTUS. Read More...

Film Threat

Indie grindhouse director Matthew Saliba manages to pay tribute to Mary Shelly’s immortal tale of a man made monstrosity gone horribly awry by assembling a multitude of talented and brilliant indie visionaries, all of whom come aboard “Frankenstein Unlimited” to tell their tales of Shelly’s monster. Matthew Saliba is a filmmaker I have been in touch with for around three years now (hard to believe it has been that long already) through Rogue Cinema. He is a filmmaker that simply defines “unique”. I reviewed both of Matt's earlier works, She Was Asking For It and his modern undertaking of Vampyros Lesbos, for the magazine and utterly adore both shorts. I've interviewed him (and will be doing so again hopefully for Frankenstein Unlimited) and regularly keep up with his work. He's been talking about this project forever it seems, with updates on a weekly basis, so I've been looking forward to the movie for a while now. Read More...

I have been waiting a while for Frankenstein Unlimited; a project headed by Matthew Saliba, involving five other Indie directors from Montreal. Each director in this anthology used Mary Shelly's Frankenstein novel as inspiration to create their own short film. The result vary greatly in content, but in quality it far surpassed my expectations! Read More...
